Opportunity
- An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Stroke Medicine team at an NHS Foundation Trust serving the community of West Norfolk and the surrounding region. We are looking for a committed and clinically excellent Consultant in Stroke Medicine to help lead and develop our stroke service.
- This is a key clinical leadership role within a forward-thinking department. The successful candidate will join a supportive multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering high-quality, evidence-based stroke care – from hyperacute assessment and thrombolysis through to rehabilitation and secondary prevention.
- The post includes a generous Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) allocation, structured on-call commitment, and flexible job planning to support a sustainable and rewarding career. Applications from candidates seeking full-time or less-than-full-time arrangements are equally welcome.
- This is a genuine opportunity to shape stroke services at a community-facing Trust, make a meaningful difference to patient outcomes, and enjoy an exceptional quality of life in one of England’s most distinctive regions.
Key Responsibilities
Hyperacute & Acute Stroke Care
• Provide consultant-led assessment and management of patients presenting with acute stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA), including hyperacute care on the Stroke Unit.
• Lead and participate in the delivery of thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy pathways, working within regional networks.
• Oversee management of patients on the acute stroke unit, ensuring timely, evidence-based interventions and high-quality MDT working.
• Provide clinical oversight and decision-making for complex stroke presentations, including large vessel occlusion, haemorrhagic stroke, and rare stroke aetiologies.
• Contribute to the stroke on-call rota, providing consultant cover for acute stroke emergencies.
Rehabilitation & Secondary Prevention
• Lead consultant input into the stroke rehabilitation pathway, working closely with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, neuropsychology, and nursing colleagues.
• Oversee secondary prevention clinics, including post-stroke and TIA follow-up, ensuring patients receive optimal medical management to reduce recurrence risk.
• Support the development and delivery of early supported discharge services in collaboration with community and social care partners.
• Contribute to atrial fibrillation detection and anticoagulation pathways as part of the stroke secondary prevention programme.
Leadership, Education & Governance
• Take an active role in stroke clinical governance, including participation in the SSNAP (Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme) and local quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide clinical leadership for the stroke multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and compassionate care.
• Contribute to the teaching and training of junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
• Engage with regional stroke networks, integrated care systems, and pathway development across the healthcare economy.
• Maintain and develop clinical expertise in line with RCP and BASP Continuing Professional Development requirements.
Essential Criteria to Apply
Qualifications & Registration
• Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine and/or Geriatric Medicine, or within six months of eligibility at the time of interview.
• MRCP (UK) or equivalent specialist qualification.
• Completion of a recognised higher specialty training programme with substantial stroke medicine experience, or equivalent.
Clinical Experience & Skills
• Demonstrable experience in the full stroke pathway, from hyperacute assessment and thrombolysis through to rehabilitation and secondary prevention.
• Experience in TIA clinic management and secondary prevention strategies.
• Familiarity with thrombectomy referral pathways and regional network working.
• Ability to work independently as a consultant and contribute effectively to the stroke on-call rota.
• Evidence of engagement with SSNAP, clinical audit, and stroke service quality improvement.
What’s on Offer for You?
• Permanent or fixed-term salaried NHS Consultant contract: £113,565 - £150,569 (Depending on Experience).
• Flexible job planning: we will work with you to design a job plan that reflects your clinical interests and personal circumstances, whether full-time or less-than-full-time.
• Generous SPA allocation to support CPD, audit, research, teaching, and leadership activity.
• Defined and manageable on-call commitment as part of a well-supported rota.
• Relocation assistance available for eligible candidates.
• Dedicated Study Leave budget and support for RCP and BASP CPD requirements.
• Access to staff wellbeing services, an employee assistance programme, and health and fitness facilities.
• Opportunities to develop subspecialty interests and contribute to regional stroke network leadership.
• A genuinely welcoming, stable and collegiate working environment with strong MDT relationships.
Location in Detail
This post is based in West Norfolk, a distinctive and rewarding part of England that offers an exceptional quality of life alongside a fulfilling clinical career.
West Norfolk is a largely rural and coastal county, home to dramatic landscapes including the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Broads, and miles of unspoilt beaches. The area is well known for its strong sense of community, low crime rates, and significantly lower cost of living compared to London and the South East.
Local towns offer excellent schools (state and independent), a vibrant arts and culture scene, and outstanding outdoor pursuits including sailing, cycling, horse riding and walking. The region is also renowned for its food and drink – from fresh seafood to award-winning local produce.
Transport links are good, with direct rail connections to Cambridge and London Liverpool Street, making the area accessible for those with ties to the city. Norwich, the county city of Norfolk, is approximately 45 minutes by road and offers further retail, dining, and cultural amenities.
For candidates considering relocation, West Norfolk offers an outstanding place to raise a family, enjoy a calmer pace of life, or pursue interests outside of medicine – without compromising on professional challenge or career progression.
