Description

Barker Animal Hospital is seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) to join our team and support both outpatient care and procedural services, including surgery and dentistry.

We are seeking a versatile, client-focused technician who thrives in a dynamic general practice environment — balancing exam room care, surgical support, high-volume dentistry, and client communication at a high clinical level. At Barker, there's no front vs. back divide: everyone is eager to jump in where needed, and we've built a collaborative, supportive culture since opening in 2016 that we're genuinely proud of. We value credentialed technicians for the clinical knowledge, judgment, and communication skills they bring.

This is a fully Fear Free certified practice where every patient interaction is handled with care and intention — and all 4 of our DVMs are Fear Free certified to match.

In this position, you will play a key role in both outpatient and procedural workflows, contributing to a consistent, high standard of care throughout the patient visit.

Responsibilities include:

  • Splitting time between exam room, outpatient, and surgical caseload support
  • Performing anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery for soft tissue surgeries, spays/neuters, and more
  • Assisting in surgery and supporting a high-volume dental program, including full-mouth digital radiographs, oral charting, ultrasonic scaling, and polishing
  • Performing venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and medication administration
  • Running in-house diagnostics and supporting laboratory sample collection
  • Maintaining accurate, detailed medical records and treatment documentation
  • Reviewing treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions with clients clearly and compassionately
  • Building strong client relationships through education, communication, and attentive service

Schedule and compensation:

  • Compensation: $27.00 – $32.00 per hour, for each hour worked
  • Schedule: This is a full-time or part-time position (part-time 2–3 days/week) with a flexible 4 x 10 schedule, Monday–Friday with the possibility of rotating Saturday shifts in the future as our team grows. No on-call or emergency hours.

Full-time Benefits Package:

  • Bonus package: $2,000 based on active, good-standing LVT credentials in the state of Virginia
  • CE allowance: $500–$1,000 based on tenure and credentials
  • Health package: Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance and disability
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 401k with company match
  • Paid time off in accordance with site policy and applicable law
  • Personal pet discount
  • Uniform allowance

Part-time team members may be eligible for limited benefits in accordance with company policy and state law.

Minimum qualifications and skill set:

  • 1+ years of veterinary technician experience; training considered for the right candidate
  • Active, good-standing Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) license in Virginia required
  • Recent graduates pending VTNE testing, or out-of-state license-holders eligible to transfer, are encouraged to apply
  • Reliability and attendance are essential — a consistent, dependable presence is a must
  • Excellent communication skills — the ability to communicate clearly with your team is as important as your clinical skillset
  • Proficiency in the following skills is required:
    • Safe, low-stress, Fear Free patient handling and restraint
    • Outpatient care and exam room workflow management
    • Venipuncture and basic patient assessment
    • Client education and communication
    • Accurate medical record documentation and exam notes/scribing
  • Skills we're willing to help you develop:
    • Anesthetic induction, monitoring, and recovery
    • Surgical assistance and aseptic technique
    • Dental prophylaxis and digital dental radiography
    • IV catheter placement and medication administration
    • In-house laboratory diagnostics (IDEXX)
    • Radiology positioning and safety protocols
